- BY SEAN WALL

Wolfe Tones 0-15 Ratoath 0-14

CIAN WARD struck seven points, including the winning score, as Wolfe Tones caused a minor surprise in the Meath SFC quarter-final at Ashbourne last Friday evening.

All of the former county star’s scores came from placed balls, with the decisive one coming right at the death at the end of extra time.

It was a point from Eamon Wallace that tied up the sides at 0-11 each and forced the game to an additional 20 minutes.

he teams were also level as they changed ends for the first time at 0-4 each.

Wallace contributed seven points, all frees, for the Ratoath men before he was dismissed on receipt of a second yellow card near the finish. His brother Joey was Ratoath’s main threat in attack, notching five points from play.

Ratoath led 0-4 0-1 in the opening half before Tones finished strongly with three points, including two from Niall O’Reilly to be level as the sides turned around at the break.

The leads changed on a number of occasions throughout a closely fought second half, but Wolfe Tones’ greater experience at this level was evident in extra time as Ward and Thomas O’Reilly pointed them towards a semi-final spot.
