Offaly good win for in-form ‘Well

Edenderry Town Newfoundwell 1 3

NEWFOUNDWELL’S fine start to the season continued on Friday night as they made the long trip home from Edenderry with a Leinster Junior Cup win under their belt.

The side managed by Danny Gartland and Paul Crowley dominated the tie almost from start to finish and struck for their opening goal after only 13 minutes.

Alan Murphy, Ryan Connor and Cormac Reid were all involved before the final pass was supplied for Ian Devine, who shifted the ball from one foot to the other and hit an instant shot from 20 yards which wrong-footed the Edenderry keeper.

At the back, Kevin Bull, Paddy O’Boyle and Daryl McDonagh looked very solid, while others to shine in that first half were wingers Ross Reid and Kenny Hurley, the latter making his first-ever start for the team.

Indeed, Ross Reid had a hand in the ‘Well’s second goal on 25 minutes, advancing down the right flank before releasing his brother Cormac, and the latter teed up Devine who finished confidently to make it 2-0.

The Drogheda side could easily have added to their tally before half-time, with centre-halves Bull and O’Boyle a particular threat from set-pieces.

So it was no surprise when Newfoundwell’s third goal - scored in the 55th minute - stemmed from a corner kick.

Once again the two big men went up to contest the ball in the air, although O’Boyle actually scored with a left-footed shot as the corner broke to him in the penalty area.

Edenderry did manage to pull a goal back with a well-struck free kick that left Ronan Brown rooted to the spot, but it was too little too late and Newfoundwell march on to the next round.

In the meantime, they welcome another Leinster Senior League club, Drogheda Town, to DIFE in the FAI Junior Cup next Sunday. NEWFOUNDWELL: Ronan Brown, Kevin Bull, Paddy O’Boyle (Gaz Smith), Daryl McDonagh, Ross Reid, Kenny Hurley, Ryan Connor, Alan Murphy, Cormac Reid, Ian Devine, Craig O’Connor.
