BOYNE AC began the new cross-country in the best possible fashion on Sunday when ending Mullingar Harriers’ 13-year domination of the annual Star of the Sea AC event in Stamullen.

This hugely popular competition always attracts a large competitive field and has seen the Westmeath club take home the Best Overall Club Shield for the last 13 years, but the coveted trophy proved out of reach on this occasion as Boyne AC swept the boards with podium places in most events.

Their juvenile athletes were out in force and getting the day off to a winning start was Chloe Cooney in the Girls Under-9 race, and with Ally Fennell in 10th and Shruti 13th the girls took second team.

Shea O’Donnell took a fine second-place finish in the Under-11 Boys race, as did Paddy Price in the Under-12 race as he produced a super sprint to the line. Neil Culhane won the Under-13 race in another tight sprint finish.
