CLOVERHILL

MICEAL Byrnes (15) continued his fairytale year to date by capturing the very prestigious Singles Matchplay attempt with a 4/3 win over favourite Paul Kelly (6). Miceal who carried forward a 24 handicap into this year was determined to get it down, taking lessons off our resident PGA Professional Keith Shannon who instilled a work ethic into his game, a thing called practice and it has paid huge rewards not least this latest win despite his 9 shot drop in handicap.

There were quite a few new most welcome débutantes in the September 3 categories Singles stableford at the weekend, who have availed of the fantastic 2018 membership deal currently on offer for new members by Colin. With “placing through the green” in operation it was a tough baptism for some as the scoring from the regulars in 3 of the 4 categories was exactly the same a staggering 44 points.

With 23 points over the Back 9 it was Pearse Murphy (10) who emerged as overall winner getting the better of Raymond Quinn (15) and Noel Magill (23) who both had 44 points. There was consolation for both as Raymond won Category Two (13-19) from Stephen Cunningham (18) with 42 pts and Noel Category Three (19-28) from Patrick Allen (20) who had 40 pts. Category One (0-12) was won by Conor Walker (10) with 40 pts one better than David Hamill (8).

Next week sees President Pius Tierney host his Prize Day with hopefully better weather to look forward to. Prize giving for Presidents will take place on Sunday afternoon.

Forkhill GFC will be hosting their annual golf classic this coming Saturday. Anyone wishing to enter a team to win some of the terrific prizes on offer can contact any Forkhill member or simply contact Cloverhill at 30 889374or 30889580

The committee would like to thank all who helped in any way with the fundraising Nite at the Races

The winning combination for the £/€1,000 was 236451.

The ticket with the winning combination was not returned to the committee, either sold or unsold, so the prize boosted the fundraising funds.

The opening race of the night was a Pig Race with a 50/50 split (worth £190) for the correct forecast 1-2 and it was won by Conor Tierney.

The following were the other race winners with each receiving £20

The draw for 2018 Free Cloverhill Membership, amongst the members who had sold their allotted 6 tickets went a long -long way to Tipperary,it’s because his heart lies here as Premier native John Kelly was picked out as the winner.

Eamon Begley (17) the leader in the BC Electrics, Dundalk sponsored Friday Open bonus prize of €100 for leading visitor score at the end of each month on 39 points strengthened his position at the top by winning the penultimate round of the competition last Friday.

The Ashfield Golfer fended off the main opposition, which ironically came from his own 3 ball as they went head to head in a terrific contest. Finishing with 3 solid par’s Eamon 41 pts pipped Greenore’s Sean Magee (10) by a single point with Chris O Hanlon (17), Ashfield, a further shot in arrears. His playing partners vowed to return for the last Friday Open of 2017 to seek revenge and deny Eamon the added bonus to go with his winners cheque from last week

The last round of the BC Electrics, 2017 Friday Open will take place this coming Friday.

The Seniors will be first into action for President Pius Tierney array of beautiful prizes. A decanter set and a lovely bowl are the rewards for his fellow Seniors this Thursday as they get things in motion prior to the weekend play of the other members and ladies who will be out in numbers to support our very popular club President Pius.

DUNDALK

EIGHT handicapper Ciaran Johnson has had a week to remember. After finishing second in Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition he went one better on Sunday to claim the Irwin Lockington Salver.

The winner’s podium looked a long way off on Sunday when Johnson stood on the fourth tee after double-bogeys at the first and third but he parred the index one and then went par-birdie-parbirdie-par-birdie-par over the next seven holes before parring his way from the 11th to the 15th,

He then double-bogeyed the par four 16th but recovered to finish with back to back pars and record a nett score of 68 have gone out in 35 nett and returned home in 33 nett. That was enough to pip Colm Coburn (20) by one shot on countback after both had finished on 68

Peter Rogers (2) with a one-under par 71 returned the best gross while category winners were Vincent Conlon (7), Ollie Reilly (16)
