A SEISMIC SHIFT OR ONE OVER THE EIGHT?

Meath Co-Councillor Paddy Meade’s reference in last weeks’ issue of the Drogheda Independent that “the town land of Mornington runs to the edge of the Neptune hotel” (which is a fact) confirms my long-held belief that the Laytown & Bettystown golf club is actually in Mornington. Whatever about Bettystown which might have a squeak; how on earth did Laytown get into the equation? It would appear that the name Laytown and Bettystown came

into being around the 1890s at the founding of the golf club. Perhaps the good men of the founding committee may have had one over the eight and this may have had an effect of clouding their geographical knowledge. There is another possible reason but it’s highly unlikely, and that is that there could have been a seismic geographical shift in due northerly direction. As there has been no recording of this anywhere. We’ll have to go with the original assumption.
