Gould Piano Trio to perform in Drogheda
THE renowned British Gould Piano Trio will come to Drogheda for one night only on Friday, October 13ths as part of the Drogheda Classical Music series.
The concert is the second in the series for 2017/18 and will take place at 7.30pm in St Peter’s Church of Ireland.
Formed over 25 years ago, the Gould Piano Trio is made up of three top musicians who are recognised worldwise for the brilliance of their sound and musical greatness.
Launched by their first prize at the Melbourne Chamber Music Competition and subsequently selected as YCAT Artists, they toured in Europe and the USA as ‘Rising Stars’ and made a highly successful debut at the Weill Recital Hall, described by Strad Magazine as ‘Pure Gould’. Individually, violinist Lucy Gould, cellist Alice Neary and pianist Benjamin Frith have had successful careers but it is in their ensemble that they receive the greatest acclaim.
According to the Washington Post, the British-born Gould Trio have ‘ the combination of jeweller-like precision and a musical fire that ignites from the first bar’.
For their first visit to Drogheda, they will perform three major works for piano, violin and cello including Mendelssohn’s much-loved Piano Trio No 1.
On first hearing Mendelssohn’s Trio in D, Schumann wrote: ‘ This is the master trio of our age. It is an exceedingly fine composition which will gladden our grandchildren and great-grandchildren for many years to come.’
Haydn’s Trio in G is his most well-known piano trio and sometimes nicknamed the ‘Gypsy’ trio because of its finale in Hungarian style.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Archduke Trio.
Dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, a long-time friend and patron of Beethoven, it is a large scale impressive work with much beauty. Beethoven gave the premiere performance of the piece but as he was going deaf at the time, it was not his finest playing and so was to become his final piano performance.
This is a concert for anybody that enjoys piano, violin, cello or an evening of beautiful music.
