Parking now the big issue in Duleek

THE recent street improvemen­ts in Duleek has led to another problem - a lack of public parking.

‘I’m delighted with the works but they have presented another issue, a lack of parking’, Cllr Sharon Tolan told the Laytown/ Bettystown area meeting.

‘Is there any plans to talk to landowners to provide a public car park for the village’, she asked. ‘ The problem has been highlighte­d even more now.’

She said the works will at least slow traffic which is what is wanted.

MUSE OF YEATS

THE Muse of Yeats Festival is a two-day event on Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th, at Rossnaree House, Slane. The festival will be filled with activities to delight the senses, from talks to theatre to music.

The exciting programme on Saturday includes discussion­s by renowned Yeatsian scholars, authors, and artists. Joseph Hassett talks about Iseult Gonne as Muse and Adrian Paterson, Ph.D. will give voice to Maud Gonne. The talks will be wrapped up by Ailbhe Smyth, a well-known Irish academic, speaker and activist whose title,

‘The Fight Goes On: Women, Politics and Culture’ should be one of the highlights of the afternoon. Not to be missed is the afternoon hour-long theatrical production, “The Muse and Mister Yeats, a play for voices” performed by the Curlew Theatre, as the play brings to life some of Yeats’s muses. There will be opportunit­ies to browse through book and gift stalls throughout the two days.

Saturday evening will end with a candlelit dinner and live music by the Lost Brothers and Steve Wickham. Tours of the special exhibition will also be open between 1pm and 5pm on Sunday.

LEDWIDGE CENTENARY SEMINAR

MEATH County Council and the Francis Ledwidge Museum Committee, in collaborat­ion with Gerald Dawe (Trinity College Dublin), are organising a one-day seminar to mark the centenary of the death of Francis Ledwidge in Slane Castle on Saturday 14th October 2017. Contributo­rs include Myles Dungan, Gerard Dawe, Lucy Collins, Fran Brearton and Frank Ledwidge. The book ‘A Bittern Cry’ will also be launched at the seminar which starts at 9.45am and concludes at 4pm. Francis Ledwidge Centenary bronze sculpture by artist Liam Ó’Broin and commission­ed by Meath County Council will be unveiled on the same evening. TIDY TOWNS

CONGRATULA­TIONS to Slane Tidy Towns who finished top of their category in Meath in the 2017 competitio­n. Slane were awarded 311 points in Category C, population 1,001 - 2,500, up six points from last year. A fantastic achievemen­t to all concerned, especially the hard working committee to spend endless hours of voluntary work ensuring that the village always looks well.
