Gers host successful under-12 tournament

-

GERALDINES hosted their inaugural U12 Girls end of season tournament attracting 17 clubs from six different counties to McGeough Park recently.

The aim of the Tournament was to provide a fun day out for our girls and afford them the opportunity to play football against teams from other counties.

The standard of football played was simply breathtaking at times, with players exhibiting passion, integrity and desire for the game well beyond their young years.

The Geraldines fielded two teams on the day, one was drawn from the ranks of the incumbent U12s (Gers Green) and the other was made up of the U11s (Gers White). Both teams were drawn in very difficult groups, Gers Green won two of their group matches and prevailed over the eventual winners (Carryduff) in a very hotly contested and exciting game, they progressed to the quarter finals of the Cup but were unfortunately knocked out by Donaghmore Ashbourne after a spirited performance. Gers White battled their way through the group stages to a Plate Semi- final against Pearse Ogs of Armagh, the young Gers eventually edging out Ogs to then feature in a tense final against killeavy, which they came through to win and lift the Plate. Castlewellan won the Shield competition and Carryduff from Belfast won the Cup in a tight game, with only one point sealing victory against a previously unbeaten Colmcilles of Meath.
