Eva’s victory caps profitable day for Boyne

EVA Cummins’ victory brought down the curtain on another excellent display by Boyne AC athletes on day two of the Louth Cross-Country Championsh­ips at DkIT.

The testing course held several challenges for the competitor­s, with a multitude of hills and inclines to test even the most seasoned runner, and the adults were first to take on the challenge.

Here, Catherine Tiernan Bell ran a strong race in the Intermedia­te Ladies 4,000m, finishing in a commendabl­e second place, with Sandra McGuinness running well also.

In the men’s race Joe Carroll made his cross country debut with a great run over the 8,000m distance.

The juvenile races then began, and Boyne’s Under-9 Boys took on a tough 1500m, with third place going to Tadgh Forde Dunne, fourth Cormac McEvoy ninth Luca McLoughlin, 12th Callum Byrne, 15th Leon Regan, 20th Daniel Hanley and 26th Charlie Kingston.

The Girls U-9s were equally successful, with a superb win for Chloe Cooney, followed closely by Ally Fennell (3rd), Shruthi Prasad (5th), Isabelle Hearty 14th and Rose NicGabhann 20th.

In the Under-11 age group Boyne’s boys took the gold medal, with a superb win from Shea O’Donnell, followed by Lorcan Forde Dunne and Alex Robertson, both out of age, who battled it out in the last few metres to take fourth and fifth respective­ly, with Emmett McEvoy just behind in sixth. Clubmates Fergus Nolan and Daragh Callaghan also ran well.

The Girls U-11 team also had a tough 1,500m to contend with, but Eimear Cooney made it look easy as she produced a fantastic run to take second place, out of age, with Kate Culhane having a super finish to take the fifth spot. Sholah Lawrence was not far behind in eighth, while Isabella Garcia ran well to finish 13th, followed closely by Chloe Hanley, Aine Sheedy and Eabha NicGabhann.

It was team gold for the U-13 Boys in their 2,500m race thanks to a fine win from Neil Culhane and a super second place form Danny Nugent, ably assisted by a fourth place finish from Paddy Price, late challenge to claim second place, and he was joined on the medal podium by the ever-improving Ben McKeown who put in running out of age, and a solid run from Caelan Quinn to finish in ninth overall. There was some excellent running too from Max Kingston and Adam Byrne.

Not to be out-done by the boys, the another strong run to finish seventh. Ruairi Carpenter, in only his second competitiv­e race, also produced a good performanc­e U-13 girls also took team gold, with a second-place finish from Eabha Cosgrove, Siofra Devine fourth, Meadhbh Nolan sixth and Saran Meite seventh.

Eimear Doyle had a great run, finishing and was unlucky not to medal.

The girls under 13 had four representa­tives from the St Peter’s club and over 16th, with clubmate Ella McLoughlin finishing in 19th.

The distance took a jump to 3,500m for the U-15 Boys, but this didn’t deter Callum Sheedy who took silver and Christian Quinn who took bronze, while in the U-17 Boys 5,000m Tadgh Everitt Thompson ran well to finish in fifth place.

Last but not least, it was yet another win for talented distance runner Eva Cummins, who took victory in the U-19 Girls 4,000m in a superb time of 17:19.
