Domestic waste issue for council

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

PEOPLE dumping household waste in council bins are causing huge issues for the local authority - at a time when councillors are asking for more bins!

The matter was raised by Cllr Sharon Tolan at last week’s area meeting in Duleek when she made a call for additional bins for the Bettystown area.

‘We need extra bins on the Golf Links Road and the East Ham Road as there are a lot of walkers and schoolchildren using the areas,’ she stated.

‘ The amount of litter there looks terrible.’

However, Engineer Christy Clarke said the council were trying to work out a schedule for cleaning out bins but there was a ‘ huge problem’ with domestic waste being dumped in the bins.

Indeed, instead of adding bins, he indicted ‘problematic’ ones would be removed by the council.

He was asked about the posibility of more ‘ big belly’ bins, but they come at a cost of €5,000 each.

Cllr Tolan also asked that street sweeping in Bettystown become weekly, rather than monthly.

The engineer confirmed that it was increased for the summer period but there is a cost involved in it.

He said he’d make an effort to get the service extended to twice a month.
