Local air quality needs monitoring

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

LOCAL councillor Sharon Keogan wants four ambient air monitoring units installed in the East Meath region as a ‘matter of urgency’.

Speaking at last week’s area council meeting, she said there was a time when there were units in the area, including Drogheda South and North, but were just in operation for a short time. She said air quality was important and they had ‘ high density industry’ in the area.

‘We need these units, north, south, east and west of Duleek and a lot of work needs to be done on it. Health can’t be risked,’ she added..

Cllr Tom Kelly said he felt that air quality monitoring was being neglected and monitors in south Drogheda were stopped in 2007 and in north Drogheda in 2009.

Council officials said they would pass on the comments to the environmental department.

The EPA have said that there is a monitor in Navan and they are satisfied that it gives a geographical spread.

Submissions can be made if it is felt there is a scientific basis for additional units.
