Death of former mayor, Matt Nolan

TRIBUTES have been pouring in this week for former Mayor of Drogheda Matt Nolan.

Deeply involved in the AOH in Shop Street for a great many years Matt was Chairperso­n of both the Drogheda Port and the St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He was.also Chairperso­n of the 77th Cumann of Fianna Fail and was Chairperso­n of the South Louth Comhairle Ceanntair.

He recently stepped down as secretary of the Comhairle Dail Ceanntair.

He was a life-long member of Fianna Fail and was thrilled in 1989 to be co-opted onto the then Drogheda Corporatio­n in place of his Duleek Gate colleague Aly Farrell.

One of his proudest moments was being elected Mayor of Drogheda in 1991 and he carried out his Mayoral duties with great dignity and honour.

Aged 63, Matt Nolan was the eldest son of the late Matt and Mary Nolan who ran a grocery shop at number 9 Peter Street.

He was educated in the Sisters of Charity and St Joseph’s CBS before commencing employment in Peter Lyons Bakery in Stockwell Street where he worked until the factory closed.
