Boyne take the team honours in Glenmore

-

INDIVIDUAL wins for Shea O’Donnell and Neil Culhane helped earn Boyne AC the overall team prize as they made a hugely successful trip to Bush, near Carlingford, for the annual Glenmore AC Cross-Country and 5k Road Race.

A surprisingly mild day saw the young athletes of Boyne continue to dominate as they claimed the Johnny Mullen Cup for the best club on the day, the first time they have collected this award.

With individual prizes for those finishing in the top 10, the Girls U-9s got things under way with a second-place finish for Chloe Cooney over the 500m distance, followed by Ally Fennell in fifth and Shruthi Sprasad in 10th. In the boys race, Cormac Mc Evoy ran a great race to finish in fifth.

The Girls U-11s ran a distance of 800m, with Eimear Cooney continuing to improve her form by finishing in a fine second place, followed closely by Shola Lawrence in fifth and Kate Culhane in seventh, both running out of age.

In the boys event, it was another impressive win for the talented Shea O’Donnell, with clubmates Lorcan Ford Dunne in fourth and Emmett Mc Evoy sixth.

Eabha Cosgrove took second place in the Girls U-13 1500m, while in the boys race it was yet another fine win for Neil Culhane, with Caolan Quinn finishing in a superb seventh place.

The Girls U-15s had 2,000m to content with, and the Boyne contingent did so in style, with Anna Faulkner running well to finish fourth, followed closely by Caer Ni Ghibne in fifth.

Callum Sheedy ran a strong race to take second overall in the U-15 Boys event, with teammate Christian Quinn just behind in third, while it was a second-place finish too for Tadhg Everett Thompson in the Boys U-17 3,000m race.

Oisin O’Gibne ran an outstanding 16:.47 to take fifth place overall in the 5k race, while brother Cormac ran 20:05 to finish in a fine 26th spot.

With marathon training also in full swing, some of Boyne’s senior members took on the 3/4 Marathon Challenge in Longwood recently, providing a good indicator of where they are in training, and of what lies ahead.

First to cross the line for the club was Rebecca Carolan, clocking 2:41 for the 19.61-mile distance, with Paul Kirwan just behind in 2:42. Derek Boylan ran a great 2:52, as did Sarah-Jane Ruddy and Nicky Veale in 3:08 and 3:09 respectively, with Karen Fairclough happy with her 3:24 time over this tough and challenging route.
