Irish Wheelchair shop gets Drogs star treatment
THE new look Irish Wheelchair Association shop opened for business - officially - on Friday and two star Drogs popped in to say hello.
Thomas Byrne and Sean Brennan were on hand to help with the opening of the premises with Mayor Pio Smith at the Workspace Cemtre on Bachelors Lane.
The shop had been on West Street and the new premises means all the IWA services are in the same location.
The group prides itself in the standard of items in the shop and are always on the lookout for clothes, bags, books, etc, but are well stocked with toys at the moment.
Service co-ordinator Clare McLoughlin said that over 40 people use the IWA service from 18-65 years and indeed some are older than that.
They collect and bring people to the centre and activities include everything from arts and crafts to bingo as well as cinema visits.
“The new IWA premises is a fantastic resource for people with disabilities and indeed the wider community in Drogheda. When people go through difficult times such as after an accident or stroke it is a great help in terms of their future recovery to avail of a resource such as those available from IWA Drogheda,’ Mayor Pio Smith stated.
The service is not necessarily for people in wheelchairs and provides a broad spectrum of services.
‘Although great strides have been made in making our town a better place for people with disabilities more needs to be done. I am hosting a disability workshop in the Westcourt Hotel in order to allow people with disabilities a voice in how Drogheda should develop into the future,’ he stated.
It’s on Saturday November 11 from 11am-1pm in the Westcourt Hotel.
There is a public invite to people with disabilities living in Louth and family members or advocates of people with disabilities.
