CLEAN GULLIES AND SAVE US ALL A FORTUNE!

-

I HAVE to wonder about forward thinking at times in relation to the council.

For example, I was walking down Magdalene Street recently during wet weather and noticed that the gullies were completely blocked. The water was simply running along the street with nowhere to go and just at the entry up to Magdalene Tower, it rushed across the road and further down the street (below).

But at that point, a huge repair job had taken place because the road was washed away.

And in the centre of the repair job was a huge hole, a major problem for cyclists using this street.

So all these problems could have been solved by simply cleaning the gullies out and allowing the water to run into them.

The same problem exists in all sections of the town and Shop Street is included in that as well as Francis Street.

I have to again referenece a wonderful man who did his best to get action from the council on these matters - the late Vincent Cusack - who said we’d save a fortune on road repairs and flooding costs if we just cleaned out a few gullies.

He made sense then - his comments still ring true.
