SCOIL NAOMH Pio in Knockcommo­n had a very big birthday recently - 100 years!

The school had a special visitor in Bishop Smith who came along to bless the building and wish the school body the very best for the next 100 years.

Past pupils also came along as the students dressed in period uniforms and released 100 balloons to mark the occasion.

The school has seen some changes down the years and in recent decades has undergone significan­t refurbishm­ent.

The old school house was renovated with a storeroom and indoor toilet added and the windows redone and on that occasion an open air Mass was celebrated by then Donore PP, Fr Brogan and former Minister Mary Wallace cut the ribbon into the school.

Four years ago, Minister Ruairi Quinn opened the new school building - sporting six rooms. Special guest that day was Charlie Smith (88) who had enrolled in the school in 1931 at the age of six.
