Death of Sr Mairead Butterly

THE death has taken place of Sister Mairead Butterly, MMM (pictured).

Sister Mairead was born in Dublin in 1946. After joining MMM she trained as a social worker. She helped to found Community Services in Drogheda and worked there for 2 years. In 1972 Mairead was assigned to Kenya and for 3 years she was co-ordinator of women’s developmen­t in Eldoret Diocese.

This was followed by 2 years in social work in the IMTH in Drogheda and in mission awareness.

After obtaining a Master’s in Community Health, Mairead did primary health care work in Nigeria. She later trained in Communicat­ion Arts and directed the MMM Social Communicat­ions Department from 1981 to 1988 and served for 4 years in the CMRS Communicat­ions Office in Ireland. In 1993 she was assigned to Malawi, where she was Executive Secretary for the Associatio­n of Women Religious. From 1996 to 2001 she worked for the Diocese of Brentwood in England in refugee developmen­t.

Mairead returned to Ireland in 2001 and was involved in administra­tion in St. Francis’ Hospice in Dublin for 6 years. Health issues necessitat­ed ongoing nursing care and she moved to Aras Mhuire. She died there peacefully on 22 October 2017.
