Time to promote the true meaning of Halloween

- Jacinta McGowan

Dear Sir,

I would like to submit the following verse for publication. It is called “Samhain” so it is quite topical and I hope it would be of interest to your readers.

Samhain

Trick or treating, ghouls and bones Skeletons and toothless crones Is that all, this time now conveys That once was holy in bygone days?

Its hallowed name has lost its glory Few now know its ancient story Of looking back at the year gone past And peace upon the earth being cast

With light withdrawing from the day And nature returning to the clay

‘ Twas also a time for folk to remember Those they had lost since last November Gratitude to the land for its bounty Was shown in almost every county The yield of the earth was a source to revere

Along with the cycle of the year.

Oh, that one day we reignite

The fire of respect we used to light Giving Hallowe’en back its crown And live the message of Celtic Samhain.
