Mitchels lift the Div 2 title
THE Division II Football Championship final between John Mitcheis and Stabannon Parnells, at Pairc Mhuire, Ardee, proved a competitive affair in terrible conditions.
In a disappointing spectacle, the Ballybailie side (from the northern end of Ardee parish) ‘ went to town ‘ in the second half to finish the hour with a handsome tally of 5-5 in reply to Stabannon’s meagre 1-2. In last year’s decider at the same venue, they also beat Stabannon (0-7 to 1-2 on that occasion) only to be deprived of the fruits of victory following an investigation at Co. Board level.
Teddy Bradley smashed a goal late in the first half and this was a big blow to the losers, and they suffered another one in the dressingroom when it was discovered that their fullback and captain, Tommy McEnteggart, couldn’t continue in the second half owing to injury.
Former Naomh Mairtin and Walshestown Rovers player, Paddy McCullough, was drafted back from the front line of the attack to fill the No. 3 spot.
Patsy Gorman and J. Manning added to the Mitchels score before Patsy McShane brought a great save from Johnny Casey in the Mitchels posts.
Five players made up the Mitchels total—J. Coyle 2-0, T. Bradley 1-1 (point from a free), J. Manning 1-1, P. McCartney 1-0, and P. Gorman 0-3 (frees).
