Shrine to St Martin features First Class Relic

-

A FIRST Class Relic has been placed in the shrine to St Martin de Porres at the Dominican Church following a special blessing in the church on Friday.

The traditional St Martin shrine has been refurbished in recent weeks and was formally unveiled during a Triduum to the saint.

On the day, Fr Jim Donleavy and Fr Dermot Brennan OP also unveiled a plaque, commemorating the building of the shrine in the 1960s.

In 1963, funds raised by the workers of Drogheda and Donaghy’s Mill in particular helped Fr Joseph Collins OP complete the shrine to the saint.

Fr Jim Donleavy said he was delighted to see the shrine back on display again and he hopes people will drop into the church by the Boyne to see and appreciate it and spend some time in reflection beside it.

‘ The Dominican holds a special place in the heart of the people of Drogheda and we wanted to erect a plaque with the unveiling to just say thanks to them.

‘Funds back in the 1960 raised by workers in the town helped establish this shrine to St Martin and it is important to remember the contribution they paid, which is enjoyed to this day,’ he continued.
