Dundalk combo unlock U16 title
THE Dundalk combination of Sean O’Mahonys/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill edged a titanic tussle with their town rivals Dundalk Gaels in the Argus U-16 Division 2B league final in Darver.
In a hard fought match the combination side led at half time by a 1-5 to 0-5, thanks to a well-taken goal by Cody McAreavey and four sweetly struck points from Terence Kelly’s left foot.
The Gaels did raise a green flag early in the second half but they never managed to get their noses in front and two great goals from Oisin Marron and Ross McNally gave the Sean O’Mahonys/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill lads a seven point lead.
Dundalk Gaels rallied with five points in a row to cut the deficit to two, before a couple of quick-fire points from Ross McNally and Cody McArevey, his third from play, left four between the teams with time almost up.
A controversial goal right at the death, cut the lead down to the bare minimum, but when the final whistle was blown, the Sean O’Mahonys/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill side had won by 3-9 to 2-11.
‘Keeper Precious Kent made a couple of important saves, while there was some tenacious tackling from the whole defence, especially Oisin McCumiskey, Less Byrne and Cian McKevoy. Up front Cody McAreavey kicked 1-3 while Terence Kelly landed five points.
