Nicola’s book is a work of art
LOCAL woman Nicola Cassidy launched her debut novel ‘December Girl’, saying it was inspired by her native area.
The novel, a work of historical fiction, is inspired by two true events, including an eviction that happened at Dowth in 1880 and a child kidnapping that took place in Dublin in the 1960s.
“I’ve taken these stories and moulded them into a work of fiction of my own – I added new characters and tried to imagine what it would have been like to live at the end of the 19th century in the locality. I used Townley Hall House and the landscape at Dowth as a backdrop to my fictional grand manor ‘Brabazon House’. While my characters are made up – the setting, throughout, is pretty real.”
Nicola is hoping readers will enjoy her book, but warns it’s not a light piece of fiction. “I’ve explored some pretty dark themes in the novel and I imagine some readers might even be shocked by parts of the storyline. But I’ve always written in this way – and I enjoy pushing my characters to see what their reaction will be. I think life can be very dark sometimes and it’s how we react to and deal with the challenges we face that makes up our life story. I haven’t shied away from anything in this book.”
