special presentations which had been awarded to two long serving Leaders in County Louth, Ken Leonard from 3/4/6th Louth, St Oliver’s Scout Group in Drogheda and Yvonne Lawrence from 5th Louth, Buionn Setanta in Dundalk.
The highest honour that Scouting Ireland can bestow on any member is to bestow them with the “Order of Cuchulainn”.
The “Order of Cuchulainn” consists of a silver Celtic emblem of a hound on its distinctive Crimson and Gold Ribbon is only awarded to members of the highest standing with a long and distinguished Service to Scouting and the communities that they serve.
Reading their citations former Provincial Commissioner James O’Toole alluded to their dedication of over thirty years to the various roles but in particular to their dedication to the development of the young people with whom they have worked, also as Leader Trainers they have influenced and enthused numerous Leaders through the Association’s Leader training programme and their willingness to take on other roles in Scouting above and beyond the normal expectation of leaders.
Such is the status or the Order of Cuchulainn that from twelve thousand volunteer Leaders in Scouting Ireland less than ten are awarded each year.
Both recipients received a standing ovation from the entire County on their presentation and were emotional and surprised to find that their families had been invited along and were in on the secret only appearing as the presentations were being made.
