EAST MEATH AIR QUALITY

The gremlins carried out a vicious assault on last week’s article in the Mornington notes in relation to air quality in the Northeast. They managed to sabotage many of the salient points in the article that it totally skewed the gist of the story..

Here is the version of the article which will give the reader a proper perspective.

An article appeared in the D.I on Oct 17th (page 67) which was titled “local air quality needs monitoring”. This was the view of some Meath County Councillors at a recent meeting. According to Sharon Keogan who raised the issue, she was concerned about the quality of air monitoring in the Northeast, given the high destiny of industry in the area, particularly Duleek and Drogheda.

She went on to say that the two monitors Drogheda south and Drogheda north were dispensed with. According to Councillor Tom Kelly Drogheda South went in 2007 and Drogheda north in 2009. The council officials stated that they would pass the comments on to the environmental section.

The E.P.A say that there is one monitoring station in Navan and that they are satisfied that this gives a geographical spread.

Considering the fact that prevailing winds are westerly this Navan monitor is of little use to the east Meath area where there are thousands of people residing.

How can a monitor in Navan, which is west of Duleek effectively monitor East Meath and other peripheral areas? If the prevailing winds were easterly then Navan monitor would make some sense, but, Jesus, lads the prevailing winds are westerly. We need at least four monitoring stations, north, south, east and west of these industries to give the population some protection. I believe that some institutions are giving lessons in geography.
