Late night for the juniors at Greenhills

-

THE juniors were up past their bedtime as rounds five and six were played on the same night at Greenhills last week.

In the first match Robert Mc Cormack proved too strong for a battling Sophie Thornberry who refused to throw in the towel after falling six shots behind. She whittled that deficit in half and when Robert streaked clear again she put up a brave fight to take the last end. But in the end Robert was a worthy winner by three shots.

In the next match Tadg Reilly stormed back from a four-shot deficit to take a handsome win over Caitlin Floyd. Caitlin set the early pace to open a considerable lead, but by the seventh end a rejuvenated Tadg was five up. Caitlin managed to reduce that to three by the final end, but Tadg held firm to take a deserved victory.

There was another stunning comeback in the third match as Megan Devin wiped out a five-shot deficit to see off Chloe Dykstra. Chloe started like a house on fire, but the experienced Megan slowly clawed her way back and levelled the match goping into the final end. Trading shot for shot the contest could have swung either way in the last end, but Megan somewhoe pulled through to take the win by two shots.

Caitlin Floyd was back in action against Aaron Mc Kenna in the next match and it was Aaron who made the better start, opening a three-shot lead. Caitlin reduced it to one, but Aaron pulled clear again, forcing Caitlin to pull out all the stops to level the match heading into the final end. Aaron showed remarkable composure despite seeing his lead wiped out, but it was Caitlin who produced the goods in the decisive end to take the win.

Megan Devin and Robert Mc Cormack were back in action in the fifth match and with a sixshot advantage going into the tie, Robert soon found himself eight up after making a bright start. But Megan didn’t panic and it took her just three ends to peg Robert back and level the match. Robert edged ahead again, but Megan showed all of her experience and knowhow to take victory by four shots.

A good start proved to be decisive for Ciara Floyd against Cain Mc Kenna in the sixth match. Cain did rally well midway through the match, but Ciara fought back in the next couple of ends showing a lot skill and creativity to stretch her lead and win comfortable in the end by five shots.

The seventh match between Tadg Reilly and Chloe Dykstra ebbed and flowed from start to finish, but Tadg showed nerves of steel in the final two ends to take a really hard-fought victory.

In the last game of the night Jane Whelan got off to a blistering start, adding three shots to her handicap of six to take a nineshot lead over Ciara Floyd. Ciara charged back to cut the gap to three and had to wipe out a further five shot shots when her opponent rallied again. But by the final end it was all square again and Ciara held her nerve to take the win by two shots.

On the inter-club front, Greenhills played two Division 1 home matches against Corduff BC and Cooley BC recently, winning six points out of eight on offer.
