Fundraising event this week for Mary statue
AN all day collection on the town’s main streets and shopping areas will take place on Thursday, November 30th to help in the fundraising towards a statue of the woman who built Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Mother Mary Martin.
The Mother Mary Martin Memorial Statue Fund committee have commissioned a statue of Wexford granite of the 4’ 8’’ nun who founded the MMMs worldwide.
It is planned to erect the statue at the green in Boyle O’Reilly, overlooking the hospital.
‘She deserves to be recognised for what she achieved and we feel a statue would be most appropriate,’ a statement for the group explained. ‘We are asking the people of Drogheda and the wider area to help us in the fundraising and they can play their part on Thursday.’
The project is expected to cost in the region of €11,000.
‘Mother Mary was beyond sainthood and we will also be looking for Mother Mary’s legacy to be restored at the hospital.
‘Her memory should not be wiped away and lost. People should remember that she was a medical missionary and helped people all over the world. She should be appreciated for that.’
