Call for statue to honour Louth’s Jimmy Magee
LOUTH County Council should recognise the enormous contribution which Jimmy Magee made to sport in Ireland and the ambassadorial role he played in promoting his native County Louth by erecting a commemorative statue or plaque to him, according Cllr Richie Culhane.
He proposed that this would be a fitting tribute to well known broadcaster who died earlier this year who was ‘an absolute gentleman’.
‘He was an iconic figure along with the likes of T K Whitaker, Stephen Staunton, Socks Byrne and Joey Maher, and known the world over,’ he said. He felt the council should make a gesture to the man loved by many who had raised hundreds of thousands for charity.
Cllr Peter Savagve agreed and suggested that the motion be sent to the Cooley Kickham’s GAA Club for whom Jimmy had played as they might have a suitable site along the road.
A statue like that would be a ‘great tourist attraction as he was known all over the world,’ said Cllr Frank Godfrey.
