Why pay for green bin and then fund a free plastic bottles bank?

-

Dear Sir,

I must be honest, I rarely pay bills at least not in the last 30 plus years. I leave all that stuff to my Domestic Executive Manager better known as De Wife. Admittedly I do the weekly grocery shop but I adhere to the list She who must be obeyed prepares for me.

I therefore remained aloof from all the fuss and bother of the Water Charges Debate. To pay or not to pay was the boss’s business, nothing to do with me.

Colr. Kevin Callan disagreed with Water Charges to such a degree that he decided to opt out of Fine Gael, for the present anyway. There was a lot of talk about paying twice for the same product/service. Floyd Manor, in Mell, has four bins, black, green, brown and compost. We don’t use the brown bin as I am not allowed leave the table until I have eaten everything on my plate. The Brown bin is really surplus to requirements.

The Green bin is for items which can be recycled, tin, cardboard, newspapers and plastic bottles. This bin is collected for a modest fee on a fortnightly basis or less often if it is not full.

A modest fee but a fee nonetheless. It we don’t pay it is not taken away. Colr. Callan it would appear would like this household to pay twice for this service. Once for our own plastic recyclables and again for the plastic bottles of others. Indeed it would appear that he will not vote for the Municipal Budget unless plastic recycling banks are reinstated. He also states that he will not vote for the Budget if the special Municipal Allocation is reduced. Personally I would like to see the special allocation increased rather than reduced.

Colr. Callan it appears would like his cake and yet eat it. Spend money, the money of those who paid their Property Tax and Rates force those who pay Refuse Charges to pay twice for his Recycling Banks.

Plastic bottles can take up more space than they warrant. Solution remove cap, expel air, recap bottle size reduced by 50%.

I for one, with de wife’s permission do not want to pay twice for recycling and I’m sure others feel the same.

Yours, Gerry Floyd
