Albion blitz teams sparkle in spotlight

WITH all regular Drogheda League games postponed over the weekend, Sunday’s Under-10 Girls Blitz in Monasterboice took centre stage and was hugely successful.

Albion Rovers played host to the event, a new initiative played on the Astroturf that saw Carrick Rovers, Glen Magic and Walshestown travel to play against the home team.

In all, nine five-a-side teams were involved, with more than 50 girls taking part, and with the all-weather surface available the blitz was able to proceed as planned despite the chill in the air.

The weather certainly didn’t hamper the effort and commitment of the players as they produced some tremendous entertainment.

With three games running simultaneously there were goals aplenty shared out between all the clubs, much to the delight of the onlooking coaches, spectators and families who gave plenty of positive encouragement.

The five-a-side format used ensured that everyone got plenty of opportunity to play, with players being rotated around positions, taking their turn in goals and lending themselves to other teams. The spirit and camaraderie between the players and teams was evident for all to see.

As each team had four 10-minute games, all against different teams, there was no time wasted and all too soon the final whistle sounded to mark the end of what was a hugely enjoyable day.

It is hoped that this blitz could potentially lead to a local league created for this age group of all-girls teams when the new ‘calendar year’ football kicks off in 2018/

That being the case, it was great for the organisers to see officials from Drogheda Children’s League in attendance and they seemed very enthusiastic about the event and were encouraged by the numbers in attendance, the level of skills on show and the non-competitive sporting ethos of all involved.
