Spreading the word about antibiotics
DR Rosemary Curran and Andy Cooney combined to spread the word about the ‘precious resource’ that are antibiotics as part of a special Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Outreach day at the Laurence Shopping Centre.
As part of European Antibiotics Awareness Day, the pair manned an information booth and were happy with the reaction from the public.
‘Antibiotics are a precious resource. If we all use the right antibiotics at the right time for the right duration we can all slow the amount of resistance such as MRSA and Carbapenem Resistant (CRE),’ Dr Curran stated.
CRE are bugs (bacteria) that live in the bowel and Dr Curran is keen to spread information about their threat.
Part of the event saw a raffle, sponsored by the Cottage Pharmacy group, for a quiz that tested one’s knowledge about antibiotics. Marie McCormack won the prize.
