National Symphony Orchestra in St Peter’s on Friday night

THE sixth Drogheda Internatio­nal Classical Music Series continues and lined up are:

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra with Fatma Said (soprano) and William Davenport (tenor) - What better way to start the festive season than with the forces of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra featuring prize-winners of the prestigiou­s Veronica Dunne Singing Competitio­n 2016, Fatma Said and William Davenport. The programme includes opera highlights from Massenet’s Manon and Lehár’s Giuditta, and a selection of seasonal orchestral and vocal music including the beautiful O Holy Night. Note this concert is in St Peter’s West St, to accommodat­e the large orchestra.

Johannes Moser (cello) with Andrei Korobeinik­ov - German- Canadian cellist Johannes Moser is regarded as one of the finest cellists today. He makes his first visit to Drogheda in an all-Russian programme with pianist Andrei Korobeinik­ov. This is one not to be missed.

A Night at the Opera - An evening of opera and song curated by the director of Wide Open Opera and Opera Theatre Company, Fergus Sheil who has put together six singers who really are from the top drawer of emerging Irish talent, including Muireann Mulrooney (sop) Amy Ní Fhearraigh (sop) Carolyn Holt (mez) Andrew Gavin (ten) Cormac Lawlor (bar) and Rob McAllister (bass bar).

In the early 20th centuryDro­gheda had some of the worst housing of any urban area outside Dublin. Almost 40% of the towns population lived in overcrowde­d conditions. By the 1940’s the town had been transforme­d with hundreds of condemned houses demolished and over 1,000 new houses built by Drogheda Corporatio­n. Among the houses built during this period are Beechgrove Tce, Boyle O’Reilly Tce, Bredin St, Congress Ave, Creveen Tce, Glenview, Halpins Tce, Hand St, Hardman’s Gardens, St Joseph’s Tce, Laburnum Square, Liam Leech Tce, Magdalene Street, Morans Tce, Mount St Oliver, North Road and Trinity Gardens

Peter Connell has recently completed a PhD on the provision of public housing in Irish towns between 1890 and 1945. A native of Navan, he is an active member of Navan and District Historical Society and he is joint editor of its journal ‘Navan its People and its Past’

There will be a book stall on the night. There is no fixed charge for this lecture but voluntary contributi­ons will be accepted on the night.
