A LOCAL family have got behind the ERP Ireland campaign to remind Louth consumers to have a Green Christmas and recycle batteries to Power Positivity at Barretstown this year.

Troy, Mayeth, Trinity and Dominik Bartell from Castlebellingham are helping to raise awareness as 30 million AA batteries are purchased in the run up to Christmas.

‘Batteries for Barretstown’ is a three-year initiative aimed at increasing awareness of battery recycling and raising much-needed funds for the children’s charity Barretstown for children and families affected by serious illness.

Branded waste battery collection points have been set-up in Lidl stores nationwide to assist with battery recycling and to help raise vital funds for Barretstown camps.

Batteries can also be recycled free of charge in any retail store selling batteries, in schools, libraries, civic amenity sites or at ERP’s free recycling events held across the country.

‘Batteries for Barretstown’ will run across eight counties, including Louth, where ERP will distribute newly branded little green ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ recycling boxes to schools, libraries and retail outlets to support the campaign.

Martin Tobin, CEO, ERP, said: #We at ERP Ireland want to wish everyone a Merry Green Christmas and remind people to recycle their batteries and support our ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ campaign.

‘With the equivalent of 30 million AA batteries bought over the Christmas period – it is timely to remind consumers to dispose of their used batteries at their local Lidl store when buying new ones. Batteries can also be recycled free of charge in any shop selling batteries, in schools, libraries, civic amenity sites and all batteries collected will contribute towards the initiative and raise much-needed funds for this worthy children’s charity. Almost 50% of batteries sold end up in landfill because they’ve been thrown out in domestic waste, and so the valuable materials inside are lost forever. We hope our ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ campaign will raise awareness of the ease by which batteries can be recycled.’

Dee Ahearn, CEO, Barretstown said: ‘Once again we are appealing to consumers to be environmentally aware this Christmas and Power Positivity at Barretstown, and help us bring more families and children through our residential and outreach programmes.’
