Constituency name change
SENATOR Ged Nash has proposed that the name of the Louth Dáil constituency be formally changed to ‘Louth & East Meath’.
The Labour Party has tabled an amendment to the Dáil Constituencies Bill which will be debated in the Oireachtas this week and next to include ‘East Meath’ in the official title of the current Louth constituency.
Senator Nash said, “It is only right and proper that the constituency’s title should fully reflect the geography of the area it covers and the county identity of thousands of constituents.
“The Boundary Commission report of 2007 first proposed the inclusion of areas such as Laytown, Bettystown and Mornington in the Louth Dáil constituency.
“Successive independent electoral boundary reviews have supported the inclusion of significant parts of East Meath in the constituency.
“There are good grounds for the name to be changed to Louth & East Meath in order to properly describe the area we represent and to ensure that the identity of Co. Meath constituents is fully asserted and protected.”
