Megan’s night in singles

-

MEGAN Devin, Robert McCormack and Caitlin Floyd took the first three places in the Greenhills Round Robin Championship Singles following the final round of matches.

The members were out in big numbers to watch the games, which were played over nine ends, with some great bowls on view.

First up, Robert McCormack played Caitlin Floyd and the latter managed to take the first three ends to go four up before extending her advantage to fives.

Robert was on the ropes at this stage but got the rub of the green in the sixth end to cut the deficit down to three shots. That was the turning point as he gained confidence and stormed into a two-shot lead with one to play.

Caitlin fired into the head, but although she won the end she still came up short by one in a great battle.

Sophie Thornberry took on Chloe Dykstra who found herself four down after three ends. However, she recovered well in the fifth end, showing great mental strength to square the match.

There was no shortage of drama in the next two ends as both players attacked the head. Sophie eventually edged two up with two ends to go, but in an exciting finish Chloe pulled a great shot out of the hat to snatch victory by two shots.

The match between Megan Devin and Ciara Floyd proved to be a cagey affair. Ciara put in blockers early in the game to obstruct her opponent getting to the head. However, after a period of sustained pressure Megan got her breakthrough in the fourth end, going two up, only for Ciara to tie it up again after six ends.

Megan went on to go three up. Ciara struggled in the last end, while Megan defended her lead well to clinch victory by four shots.

Cain Mc Kenna played Robert McCormack and the latter was five up after three ends, only for Cain to cut the deficit and eventually take the lead after six ends, one up.

Robert, though, responded by going into overdrive, taking the next two ends to go three up, and he eventually held on to take the spoils.

The fifth match was Caitlin Floyd v Megan Devin and the latter went four up after three ends but had her advantage whittled down to one after five. Megan was under pressure but managed to take the next two ends on the trot to increase her lead to three.

However, Caitlin remained resolute in the last two ends, putting sustained pressure on her opponent and producing a moment of individual brilliance to snatch victory by two shots in impressive style.

Tadg Reilly was pitted against Cain McKenna and the latter went two up after four ends, only to find himself four down after two glorious backhand draw shots from his opponent.

Cain got the deficit down to two shots with two ends to play, but Tadg responded by firing into the head on a couple of occasions to get over the line by three shots.

Chloe Dykstra clashed with Jane Whelan and the latter took an early two-shot lead. The pair were level after three ends and Chloe then upped the intensity to go three up, only for Jane to regain the initiative and lead by one with two ends remaining.

Chloe was under pressure but weathered the storm and eventually prevailed by a four-shot margin.

The final match of the night was between sisters Ciara and Caitlin Floyd and Caitlin went two up after two ends, only to find herself trailing by one after four ends.

Ciara kicked on and extended her lead to four with five ends played, but Caitlin dug deep and went on to lead by two shots, with two ends remaining.

Ciara took the penultimate end and now she was one up, but Caitlin upped the tempo when it mattered to secure victory against her big sister by three shots.

Times of play: Juvenile Tuesday 7pm to 8.15pm, seniors Tuesday and Thursday 8pm to 10.30pm. The club closes after this week for the Christmas holidays, re-opening on Tuesday January 9th.
