THERE’LL be a big local interest in this year’s Cavan International Song Contest which takes place next month.

For one of the songs through to the final was written by the owners of the Slane Recording Studios, John and Mary Dee and will be sung by Mary Duff from Lobinstown who is enjoying great success throughout the country at the moment supporting Daniel O’Donnell at his shows.

The song ‘Feel the Power of Love’ is tipped to do well in the competition. And if it does it will not be the first success for this husband and wife team.

Last year this writing combination were second in Chareville with ‘Open the Door’. A song called ‘Searching’ won the Ballincollig Contest last year and this was co-written by John and Dundalk song-writer Ann Morris.

Another exciting feature of this, the 11th song contest, is that 5 more of the 20 finalists recorded their tapes in the Slane Recording Studio. They include ‘Luck or Inspiration’ (Pat Walsh), Wicklow my Home (Sean Olahan), Rock and Roll Woman (Ray Doherty), Nothing Without You (Ian Jenkins). John tells me that the past year has been a very successful one for the Co. Meath based recording studio. This year marks 10 years in business, and many projects from R.T.E. Documentaries and films work, to singles and albums from International artists.

However, John tries to encourage as much local talent as possible, to record at his studio, because of the wealth of talent that exists in Louth and Meath.

Local artists and bands who have recorded there include Spyder Simpson, Mary Duff, Dorian Mood, Exile in the Kingdom, Village Folk, John Collier, Scrooge and Slipstream.

A feature of this studio is that they are well-equipped to go out on location to other venues around the country to do live recordings, and these have ranged from the Brass Band in Drogheda and Kentstown Marching Band to beautiful choirs, such as the Navan Male Voice Choir, Skerries Choral Choir and more recently the Augustinian Church Choir in Drogheda, conducted by Mrs. Ann Grennan who have just completed their second LP on cassette which is about to be launched.
