Constitution Hill ‘Stop’ is a nightmare for motorists

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE Stop sign at the top of Constitution Hill is proving a nightmare for motorists in icy conditions.

And local Fianna Fail activist Anthony Moore has received a number of complaints and is now urging a change in the traffic system on the Cord Road. He has called on Louth County Council to take urgent action to remove the “stop” sign.

‘At the moment, cars coming up Constitution Hill have to stop and yield to traffic coming across the Cord Road and heading for Francis Street. In summertime that would not be a problem, but it’s now winter.

‘A number of motorists contacted me about this and they told me that during the recent frost and snow, after being stopped in their cars at the top of Constitution Hill, they found it extremely difficult to take off again. Their tyres were just skidding all over the place. This is a serious problem and as the cold weather worsens, we run the risk of cars sliding back down the hill and piling into each other, or even striking pedestrians.’

He now wants traffic on Constitution Hill to be allowed travel on up Francis Street and a yield/stop sign placed on the Cord Road.

‘ The stop sign currently in place at the top of the hill needs to be moved onto the Cord Road requiring cars coming over the Cord Road to yield to cars coming up the hill. But there is no time to lose.’
