Lennon stars shine at DkIT JOHN SAVAGE
FIFTEEN young GAA stars of the future joined an illustrious list at DKIT last Wednesday night as the 2017 Lennon Cup All-Star selection was revealed.
As always, hosts and sponsors DkIT pulled out all the stops to ensure a smooth and entertaining evening, as 50 very worthy nominees and their families packed into the main lecture theatre in the state-of-the-art DkIT Nursing Building.
All of the nominees were offered hearty con- gratulations by the col- lege’s new President, Dr Michael Mulvery, who stressed that it takes a special kind of person to excel in any walk of life - including sport.
Dr Mulvery revealed he had only taken up his position two and half months ago, and even he couldn’t help but be impressed by the sports facilities on offer in the college.
He described it as one of the best, if not the best, campus in the country and said he couldn’t reccomend the courses highly enough.
‘It’s a great college, and it’s you college, and it’s right on your doorstep.’ The nominees got first-hand experience of the superb sports facilities available at DKIT Sport, which is located in the old JJB building, when they took part in a strength and conditioning session with members of DKIT’s coaching staff, including All-Ireland winner Oisin McConville and current Louth stars, Craig Lynch and Derek Crilly.
After the awards ceremony Louth Colleges Chairman Paul Malone and Louth Senior Board Chairman Des Halpenny addressed the audience. Paul paid a special tribute to the teachers who give up so much of their own time to coach GAA teams and he also thanked Louth Coachign and Games, the Darver committee and referee’s administartor Peter Bannon for all their help during the Lennon Cup competition.
Mr Halpenny, who was recently appointed as chairman of Leinster Colleges GAA, paid tribute to everyone involved in the Lennon Cup and the All-Star initiative, which he said have gone from strength to strength over the years.
He congratulated the All-Star recipients, but stressed that all of the nominees were winners, stating that are the future of Louth football.
