-

THE curtain finally came down on the St Peter’s AC Cross Country season on Sunday last when six young athletes made the long journey to compete in the National Cross Country Championships for uneven ages.

Harry O’Reilly finished off another good season in fine form when he added a his first national medal to his already impressive collection.

Harry ran a very strong race in a very competitive field in challenging conditions to finish 19th overall and sixth scorer on the victorious Leinster team that won gold in the inter provincial championship.

Harry was also part of the Louth team that finished in sixth place and was joined by two club mates on the Louth team Ben McKeown had a really good run in his first National Cross Country race and although getting boxed in for the first half of the race on the tight course made great ground in the second half and finished very strongly.

Rory Carpenter, also making his national debut, ran very bravely as he is still under 10 and will have gained valuable experience.

Dearbhla Allen wore the red singlet of Louth in the girls under 11 race and was part of the county team that finished 5th, being the fourth scorer. Dearbhla didn’t get a great start but battled her way through the large field to finish in 45th position.

The boys under 13 race saw two St Peter’s Athletes compete as part of the Louth team. Cian Gorham had a good run to finish a respectable 57th position and his club mate Sean Allen who had a terrible start, improved as the race progressed going from near the back of the large field to the middle of the pack.

The next event on the local calendar is the St Stephens day 5K Kris Kindle race which is a 5K race through the town of Dundalk in aid of a much needed Athletics Ground in the town.

Entries can be made on the event Facebook page or on the day.

The race will commence at 11am and the registration and number collection will be before the race at the Tesco Extra car park.
