CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Gavin Rafferty who claimed a gold medal at the recent Multi Nations tournament. With only a weeks’ notice he stepped up to the plate to box against the Russian number 2 on the first day. The tournament was for boxers a year older than Gavin. Gavin went toe to toe with the Russian number 2 on Saturday in what was his first time to ever box 3 / 3 minute rounds and what a fight he gave the Russian only to lose out on a 4 / 1 decision. Then on Sunday morning he went up against the German number 1 who was also a year older than Gavin in what was another cracking fight, Gavin came out the winner to take the gold medal. It was a great result and gave Gavin the chance to box and test himself against the best in Europe.

COMMUNITY ALERT
Please call on elderly relatives and neighbours, especially those living alone. See that they have all their needs, food, heat, light and fuel for fires and anything else that they may need. It is often difficult for the elderly to get out and about to get shopping at this time of year, you may be able to help out in this regard.
Also, please make sure that all Personal Socially Monitored Alarms are working as required. You can check out their operation by pressing the pendant button, when you should get a response from personnel in the Monitoring Station within seconds. It’s also time to make sure that Security Lighting is working correctly. Please make Community Alert a priority in the months ahead and beyond. Don’t forget to keep an eye on sheep in the area, and indeed further afield.
Sheep will be lambing over the next three months, so it is important that they are not subjected to attack from dogs who are let loose unsupervised. Report anything untoward that you see in this regard to the Gardai or Community Alert immediately. Alternatively, you can contact the Dog Warden on 1890 22 84 66.

CHRISTMAS 1967
. Glancing through an old Drogheda Independent dating to December 22nd 1967 I noticed the following news regarding the parish of Stamullen advert: Mrs. P. Shuttleworth was elected President of the local Irish Countrywomans Association and she spoke about the great charity work which the Guild had undertaken throughout the year of 1967 including monies raised for the Conquer Cancer Campaign, Gorta and also the provision of a party for the senior citizens of the parish. St. Patrick`s G.F.C. also held a Presentation Dinner at Gormanston College which was attended by over 300 people and at which Pat (Red) Collier was the Guest of Honour on the night; the `Red-Lad` having being part of that great All Ireland Meath Team which had captured the Sam Maguire in September of that year. The following adverts also appeared in the same newspaper 50 years ago this weekend: `Wanted- Donkey`s Cart and Harness, contact Patrick Johnson Harbourstown Stamullen`. `Chef, First-Class experience seeks post, part-time. Highest references available. Patrick J. Madden Newtown Stamullen`. `For sale- a sow, time up January 4th 1965, apply McNally Rolestown Stamullen`. A Goodwill gesture that was also carried out in December of 1967 was the fact that some 40 teenagers from the Termonfeckin area of Co. Louth who were members of the local branch of Muintir na Tuaithe were busily repairing old toys and games and performing some fine Carol Singing in order to raise funds so that `their efforts could be directed towards making this Christmas a happy one for the babies and toddlers in St. Clares Home at Stedalt in Stamullen`.
