Youth asked to lead way

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

A new Youth Leadership initiative helping Drogheda’s young people to lead the way in tackling global problems has just been launched.

ECO-UNESCO, Boomerang Youth Café, and the Southside Community Youth Project launched the new project.

The initiative aims to empower young people to take action and make a real difference in tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues.

The ‘Youth for Sustainable Development’ programme is a free youth leadership and peer education programme is open to all young people aged between 15-18 years to explore some of the world’s most pressing issues such as climate change, sustainable development and how they can take action in their local area for positive change

It will begin in January at Boomerang Café with young people being urged to register their interest soon as spaces are sure to fill out fast for this popular programme.

The 12 week programme uses fun activities such as debating, drama, art, music, to explore global issues and develop young people’s skills such as leadership, team work and how to communicate these issues to their peers.

Young people will then put their newly acquired knowledge and skills to use in the community, by carrying out an Action Project, bringing real benefits to the environment and community on a local level, whilst contributing to tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Following on from 10 successful years delivering the programme in Dublin, ECO-UNESCO are delighted to be working in partnership with Youth Services in Drogheda to offer the programme free to young people outside Dublin for the first time.

ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation, specialise in developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in young people related to the environment and Sustainable Development.

The ECO-UNESCO Youth for Sustainable Development programme is a weekly after school peer education programme that provides young people (15-18 years old) the opportunity to engage in quality Education for Sustainable Development activities. Involvement with the programme helps strengthen their capacity to take action by empowering them to become global youth leaders with the knowledge, skills, values and motivation to take action now and in the future for a more just and sustainable world.

The programme includes a variety of workshops, day trips, attending external national and international events, and variety of external guest speakers.
