August 1968 MOUNT TALLANT ATH 2 DROGHEDA UNITED 5

DROGHEDA United, in this their Golden Jubilee season, started off in great style in their quest for honours when they travelled to Tallaght on Sunday last and defeated Mount Tallant Athletic by 5-2 to win their opening League match in the A.U.L. Div. l.

Lambe, a newcomer at centre forward in place of Fay, had the honour of opening United’s account, wihen the home centre-half, in attempting to clear from a great move between Culligan, Byrne and Donnelly, drove the ball against United’s centre-forward from whom it shot into the net after only three minutes.

Prom a splendid corner by Donnelly, Casey’s great effort just flew over the bar. United were displaying splendid football at this stage, with the odd attack by the home side being very capably dealt with by Faulkner, Tuite and Maguire, that Clarke was rarely troubled.

On the ‘22nd minute United were two up when, following a great run by Tuite and a shot by Casey that was only partially cleared, Donnelly got possession and crossed for Byrne to shoot into the top corner of the net. Tiernan was twice wide following great play, but in tine 37th minute Culligan shot a wonderful third goal from 25 yards. Clarke had to rush from his goals to fly-kick to safety from a home attack. Half time score: O—3.

Another good move between Donnelly, Whelan, Byrne and Culligan, saw the latter shoot wide. Tiernan next followed with a great effort that struck the crossbar, before he put United four up after being put through by Lambe after 23 minutes. Slackness in United’s defence four minutes later allowed the home centreforward to reduce arrears. United slackened off, and five minutes from time Mount Tallant added their second goal. But two minutes later United made victory secure when Tiernan completed the scoring. This success should give the team great confidence and augurs well for their future engagements. Drogheda Unitod- C. Clarke, P Tuite, B. Maguire, P. Casey, J Faulkner, P. whelan, P. Donnelly W. Tiernan., J, Lambe, D. Culligan C. Byrne.
