YOUTH (18) IN COMA FOLLOWING ASSAULT

Injured man was found at Wellington Quay

GARDAI in Drogheda have issued an appeal for informatio­n after an 18-year-old youth was discovered with wounds to his head and face in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

He was treated by paramedics on Wellington Quay after being helped to the location by a number of other people.

He remained in a medically induced coma early this week following the incident.

A man who was assaulted in Drogheda in the early hours of New Year’s Day remains in an induced coma in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Paramedics were called to the Wellington Quay area of town at around 12.45am.

The 18-year-old victim is believed to have suffered a serious haed injury as well as facial injuries and is now in a medically induced coma in the Lourdes Hospital.

The serious assault is believed to have occurred sometime between 11pm on New Year’s Eve and 12.45am on January 1st.

The shocking attack happened in Dominic’s Park in the Ramparts area of town.

The victim, who has been identified, was found by four young people passing through the area.

The young man who was injured in the attack is said to be from the Drogheda area and it is understood his family have been informed of the incident.

The youth’s moved the victim from the site of the stabbing to Wellington Quay where they immediatel­y contacted emergency services and waited while an ambulance arrived.

The injured party was rushed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where he received treatment for a serious head injury and was placed in a medically induced coma.

A spokespers­on for the gardaí said the victim had a large cut on his head but this is not now believed to have been caused by a stab injury.

He said gardaí are appealing to the four young men who came to the victim’s rescue to make contact with them.

They are also appealing to any other witnesses or anyone who may have been in the area around this time on New Year’s Eve and noticed anything to get in touch with Drogheda gardaí on (041) 9874200.
