Stamullen BE PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY

Contact. to all clubs, organisations, associations, communitysocieties, etc. Announcements of activities, events and happenings etc. can be advertised to the readers of the Drogheda Independent via the Stamullen Notes free of charge.

The Stamullen Notes can in fact be a great outlet for such announcements as the notes of Stamullen parish and the surrounding area has a large and extended readership that is read far beyond the boundaries of our own parish.

As this is my twenty-first year as the Stamullen Notes correspondence, I have received dozens of letters, phone-calls and, of recent years, a large amount of e-mails regarding items and article, tales etc. that have appeared in the weekly regional newspaper; correspondence not just from East Meath or indeed Ireland but from people from across the world who manage to keep up with such news by obtaining a copy of their favourite newspaper every week no matter where they may be residing.

As we now head into 2018, we await to see what the coming year will present to us and what may shape and/or direct our lives accordingly. Local and regional news of interest will continue to be published in the local Drogheda Independent as indeed it has been since way back in 1884 and long may it continue into the technological age.

Once the weekly notes are published within the pages of the Press they are then also recorded, in real `hard-back` format and so they are also there for prosperity, for future references and research by individuals and historians who haven’t even been born yet.

That is why it is also good to announce your activities within the local & regional notes; for your benefit today and for the benefit of others in the future.

This is particularly true of the Stamullen area as we find ourselves ever expanding and progressing into an urban settlement and way-of-life!

For those wishing to announce their activities etc. you can make contact by e-mail to brennersm@ eircom.net Telephone Stamullen at 01-8413033 and/or by mobile to 0862260158. All notices must be with me by Thursday evenings prior to the publication of the Drogheda Independent the following Monday evening.

FROSTY ROADS

Last Wednesday night into Thursday morning, December 27th & 28th we had a pretty hard frost across these parts and people awoke to some very icy conditions and slippery roads in some parts of the parish, particularly the western end of it on the heights of Herbertstown, Clinstown, Ballestrand and Greenanstown.

The village area of Stamullen wasn’t badly affected. However, it was strange to see that, although the gritting-lorries were out on the M1 motorway from the evening beforehand, it would appear that the same lorries are not continuing to grit the access and/or exit roads to or from the Old N1 Drogheda to Balbriggan Road (now called the R.132) to the dual carriageways that takes the vehicles on and off the said M1 in the area of the City North Hotel or Junction/Exit No. 7 of the Motorway.

The slip roads on and off here last Thursday morning were in a very bad state with heavy frost and indeed, both exit and access roads are in a shaded location and so they thawed very little if at-all throughout the whole day of December 28th last.

Who is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance, gritting etc. of these slip-roads; is it a Motorway maintenance crew or is it our own Local Authority? I do believe that it is the former as occasionally there can be seen in this vicinity the Motorway or M1 maintenance trucks, employees of which also clear the rubbish that builds up here and the weeds that have to be cut down and cleared from the sides of the same slip-roads and the roundabouts and bridges associated with the motorway.

Anyway, it would be perhaps a good idea to grit the slip-roads to and from the Dual-Carriage that connects the M1 motorway at Junction 7 in Gormanston to the residents of this part of East Meath!
