Drogheda ‘clean to European norms’

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

Drogheda has been ranked 24th in th latest deemed clean to European norms in the latest IBAL litter survey.

According to the latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), Drogheda is the 24th cleanest town in Ireland, deemed to be ‘clean to European norms’.

Ennis has been named the cleanest town in Ireland in the survey and is cleaner than European norms, according to the judges, followed by Kildare, Roscommon and the environs of Dublin Airport.

Dundalk is also deemed to be clean to European norms and ranked number 29 in the survey.

The latest survey by IBAL shows Drogheda and Dundalk are in the bottom half of the ranking of 40 towns and cities, in 24th and 29th positions respectively.

Navan slipped 23 places to 34th spot and is ‘moderately littered’.

The survey shows a marked increase in litter on roads outside of towns.

The Taisce report stated: ‘A slight slip on the previous survey, but Drogheda is Clean to European Norms. There were four top ranking sites, with the remainder all moderately littered (i.e. no seriously littered sites). The presentation of West Street was much improved and deserving of the top litter grade. All of the approach and link roads were moderately littered. With a little extra care and attention at the trolley bays in Lidl it could get the top litter grade – the previously littered shrubbery areas have been cleaned up. The Recycle Facility at Trinity Street Car Park had a wide variety of litter.’

The report also noted that Dundalk has just managed to retain it’s clean status and noted that the southern end of Clanbrassil Street looked very well after extensive works which have taken place and there was a complete absence of litter in the area surveyed.

‘Louth County Council is very pleased with the news that Drogheda and Dundalk, the two largest towns in the country have achieved “Clean to European Norms” standard in the Irish Business Against Litter anti-litter league standings – all done with the cooperation of responsible residents , traders and very active Tidy Towns Groups together with the ongoing work of the Litter Wardens, Council Cleansing teams and Contractors,’ Alan Sherry, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Services & European Relations, stated.

An Taisce surveyed 25 towns and 15 city areas on behalf of IBAL.

Of these, none was judged to be a litter blackspot, and only one, Galvone in Limerick, was designated as ‘seriously littered’.
