Duleek people honoured at great awards ceremony at the Glenside

- By CAROLINE KAVANAGH

THOSE who had excelled in their field in Duleek over the past year were honoured at the recent People of the Year awards, held in The Glenside Hotel.

From community work to sports, business to politics, all were recognised at a glittering ceremony, hosted by Cllr Sharon Keogan, presented by radio personality Gerry Kelly, and prizes awarded by Olympic silver medal boxer, Kenneth Egan, along with David O’Brien, works manager at Irish Cement, Platin, award sponsors.

The event was a sell-out, with the 200 or so tickets in huge demand! Nominees in each category were supported by friends and family, and were interviewed by Gerry Kelly on the night, each outlining their unique story and achievements.

Organised by Independent Cllr Sharon Keogan, the event will become a regular fixture in the East Meath calendar. ‘ There is so much to celebrate in this area, with youngsters and adults excelling in their areas of expertise,’ she said. ‘We want to highlight all that is great in this region, especially those groups who work so hard behind the scenes to enhance our community.’

Olympic boxer Kenneth Egan, accompanied by wife Karen, was delighted to encourage young Duleek boxer, Gavin Rafferty, now a member of the Irish squad. ‘He’s got talent alright, and from now on, dedication and perseverance will get him to the top,’ said Egan.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Shaun and Liz Lynch, who have blazed a trail locally, nationally and internationally over the decades. From founding a youth club in Duleek, to establishing the Cot Death Association and Charmichael House, to sending farm stock to Africa and checking on the impact made by their in-calf heifers some 20 years later – as well as raising a family, the couple were busy. Shaun also ran his own farm machinery business and was an elected councillor with Meath County Council, whilst Liz was working full-time as a physiotherapist.
