IN MEMORY
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Kevin McKenna, Irishtown Gormanston who recently passed away. Following Funeral Mass at St. Patricks Church in Stamullen village on Sunday December 31st last, Mr McKenna was laid to rest in the family burial plot in Stamullen graveyard.
FURNITURE REMOVAL
I see that the `sneaky-night-time-dumpers` have left a suite of furniture lying along a hedgerow on the road between Greenanstown and Cronwell`s Cross area of Stamullen. Take a bow (not), that you have left another unsightly mess amidst a beautiful rural landscape, you must be extremely proud of yourselves.
A VERY SPECIAL SNOWMAN MAKES HIS RETURN
A great surprise awaited a certain family in Silverstream Close in Stamullen on Christmas Eve last. On hearing some noises out on the front lawn, a member of the family opened the front door to find a `revamped` snowman sitting looking back in at them from the darkened night.
A note attached to the snowman stated that it had been left back on the lawn at Silverstream Close by the `Friends of Alan Bonner`. It will be remembered by some of the Stamullen Notes readers that a snowman belonging to this family at Silverstream Close was `kidnapped` during the Christmas period more than ten years ago and, at that particular time, a `ransom note` was left in its place with the kidnappers seeking a few cans of Heineken in return for the snowman.
The ransom note was never paid at the time however and so the snowman remained missing over all of those years.
The said kidnappers were identified over time and the tale became a good talking point at every Christmas thereafter. Young Alan Bonner, also a resident of Silverstream Close, along with another young local lad were later named as the main culprits behind the kidnapping-prank and of course this was always denied.
Sadly and tragically, young Alan Bonner was killed during the first week in June last year while taking part in the Isle of Man TT motorcycle races and during the many tributes to the magnificent and fearless Stamullen man following his sudden demise, the tale of the kidnapped snowman was once again told and retold; the story now of course becoming legendary.
So, on last Christmas Eve, the Friends of the late and great Alan returned the revamped snowman, along with several cans of Heiniken to the front garden of the house at Silverstream Close to the surprise and delight of the occupants.
The snowman was once again placed at the front gate where it remained throughout the festive period accompanied by a can of Heinieken.
A small, hand-crafted memorial stone depicting the image of young Alan was laid beside it as a mark of respect and in fond and happy memories of the great and well-loved motorcyclist.
The small memorial stone to Alan Bonner is now placed on the little green area in Silverstream Close.
The family, to whom the revamped snowman was returned, would like to extend their most grateful thanks and appreciation to the Friends of the late Alan Bonner for their very kind thoughts and generous gesture during the Christmas period of 2017.
Well done to all concerned.
HOWARD SECURES KIMMAGE
Hard to believe it was 30 years ago this coming week when Gaybo Howard of the Stamullen Road Club announced the following in the Drogheda Independent. `Kimmage gives Course. On Sunday January 17th next (1988), Stamullen Road Club will promote a coaching course for all interested cyclists in the area.
This course will start at the Community Centre at 10.30am sharp. Stamullen Road Club have secured Paul Kimmage for this course as he will only be in Ireland for a few days before returning to his busy schedule of training for his own professional season in France.
Paul will be assisted by the National Coach Director Paddy Doran, Seamus Kennedy and Ben McKenna, former Ras Tailteann Winners. It is planned to take the cyclist out on a suitable course for some time before returning to the Community Centre for a tlak and watch some videos on cycling and to have some refreshments. Anybody wishing to take part in this course may contact Gabriel Howard of the Stamullen Road Club`.
BURNED-OUT VEHICLE.
Just before Christmas yet another vehicle, which was first abandoned on Gormanston Beach and then apparently set on fire close to the Delvin Estuary and railway viaduct at Knocknagin, was removed by the Local Athority. Some weeks beforehand another vehicle was also removed after it had been abandoned and burned-out close to Ben Head overlooking the strand.
