Jimmy Jackson signs for Drogheda United
JIMMY Jackson, Drogheda United’s latest signing, the third notable addition to the club since J immy McAlinden was appointed manager in August 1975, was a former F.A.I. amateur International.
Aged 29, and a native of Athlone, he assisted Athlone Town when the Midland club was admitted to the League, with Finn Harps, in 1969. He was later transferred, for £3,000, to Bohemians, five years ago and was a prominent member of the Dalymount Park outfit until Joe Burke won his way into the pivoted position 14 months ago .
Retained by Bohemians this season. Jackson did not resign and was assisting St. Brendan’s in the Leinster Senior League, division 1. Dundalk and at least one other League of Ireland Club tried to sign him over the past twelve months but failed to come to terms with Bohemians.
On Wednesday evening of last week following consultations extending up to five hours, United agreed terms with Bohemians and the player, and on Thursday he signed the necessary forms.
The signing of Jimmy Jackson recalls the part his father played in the stirring All Ireland semi-final between Louth and Roscommon in the ‘40’s. Bill Jackson was one of the prominent players who played such a big part in those days when Roscommon became a force in G.A.A.
