FR PATRICK PEYTON

FR Patrick Peyton who has close links to the Slane area has taken a step closer to becoming a saint after the Vatican recently declared him ‘Venerable.’ Born in Mayo in 1928, he and an older brother sailed to the U.S. to join his elder sisters who had already emigrated. In 1938, while still a seminarian, he fell gravely ill with tuberculosis. Thinking he might die, his older sister brought him Marian novenas and reminded him of the Blessed Mother and the power of the Holy Rosary. He gave himself over to God through the Blessed Virgin Mary. Soon, doctors discovered that the spots in his lungs had disappeared; and in 1941 he and his brother were ordained to the priesthood. He later founded the Family Rosary Crusade and popularized the phrase: ‘The family that prays together stays together.’ He died in 1992.

The Venerable Peyton’s sister Sarah Owens lived in Rathkenny and was a teacher in the local national school from 1951 to 1977. Fr Pat regularly visited her and celebrated Mass in the parish church. His nephews, Ronnie and Fergus Owens are well known in the locality.

CYCLE FOR CAIRDE

DESPITE the icy road conditions on St Stephen’s Day the Cycle 4 Cairde went ahead with 35 hardy cyclist taken to the roads around Slane. The spin proved an enormous success with over €2,000 raised. Local cycling hero Ian Richardson led the group up the Dublin road and took the Balrath Rathfeigh and Kilmoon area. That great cycling fundraiser Benny Grogan who recently received a Ireland Volunteer award officially started the cycle.

The Slane Spinners were out in force and some of the local cyclist who took part included Brian Kelly, Barry Harding, Martin Colfer, Simon Colfer, Pat McConnon, Kevin Carolan, Killian Galligan, Kenny Lenehan, Philip Richardson, Gerry Fogarty, Eithne Carolan, Christine McKenna, Suzanne Duff, Paddy Macken, Bruce Blake, John McKenna, Jim Grimes, Sean Mooney and Fergus Crilly.

At the start of the event there was a minute silence for our good friend Joe Roche who recently passed away. Joe was involved in this cycle over a long number of years. A number of presentations took place in the Village Inn after the event with Navan Road Club member Noel Clarke doing the honours. Cairde member Jimmy Mooney thanked all involved in the spin and all who helped in any way.

Local Cllr Wayne Harding also congratulated everyone that was part of the proceedings. Organiser Larry Clarke also thanked Slane Red Cross, Slane Gardaí, collectors, all who gave donations, support vehicles, The Village Inn, The Soap Co and Newgrange Crystal for their great support.
