Plans unveiled for historic walkway
SCENIC TRAIL WILL RUN FROM KING WILLIAM’S GLEN TO TULLYALLEN
PLANS to create a stunning scenic nature walk from the historic King Williams Glen to the pretty village of Tullyallen have been unveiled.
IT is hoped work on the project can be completed in time for next summer’s Fleadh 2018 in Drogheda.
Members of the Tullyallen Access the Glen Committee presented proposals for their plan to members of Drogheda Municipal District at their January meeting and revealed the landmark project will be submitted to Louth County Council for approval in the coming weeks.
Group Secretary Ann Carolan said the objective of the project is to link an already existing path in King William’s Glen to the village of Tullyallen.
‘ This will enable exploration of an area rich in history and nature.’
The group has received funding of €58,000 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and this will leave a shortfall of €20,000.
Ms Carolan said the group hoped that all the works will be carried out by local contractors which would help to create and maintain local employment.
‘We are an as yet unexplored tourist destination despite our proximity to Newgrange and the historic Boyne Valley,’ she said.
There are a number of stakeholders involved in the project included the committee, the local national school, local business owners, Tullyallen Tidy Towns, the Glen Emmets and Men’s Sheds.
Coillte are also on board with the plan and are ready to begin work if and when it gets the go ahead. In addition, three local farmers involved believe it will be a lasting legacy for the area and have agreed to allow access to their lands.
Ms Carolan said that if the plan gets the go ahead the committee are ready to go out to tender for the project with a view to starting work in March and a completion date of this summer.
‘We believe it is a definite example of if you build it they will come,’ she said. The plan was warmly received by councillors.
