Kathleen was part of history

-

A LITTLE bit of history was recalled recently with the sad death of Kathleen O’Brien in her 91st year.

I headed along to her 90th birthday in the Pheasant last year and heard all about the great days on Peter Street.

With sister, Dolly, Kathleen (right) ran the Home Bakery - where the Tip Top cobblers used to be - for over 20 years, starting off in 1964. Kathleen had worked with Peter Reilly for some time and then Denis Ayres, before venturing out on her own with Dolly.

The premises was famous for cheesecake, apple tarts and soda bread and some of her best customers were the crew from the Drogheda Independent who arrived in every morning for scones!

Kathleen was originally a Healy from the Ballymakenny Road.
